SUPP eyes Pujut seat, sets up public service hotline

MIRI: In what is clearly a sign of preparations for state elections, Sarawak United Peoples Party (SUPP) has set up a public service hotline in the “hot-seat” of Pujut state constituency.

The party has also consolidated its Pujut and Krokop branches into one central location.

Pujut SUPP is also incorporating the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition logo in its office signpost.

All these moves are seen as early preparations by SUPP-GPS to wrestle Pujut from Sarawak DAP which it will face in the next state elections.

Though the 12th Sarawak state elections is only due by June 2021, indications point to the possibility of a much earlier polls.

And the latest developments in Pujut SUPP has added fuel to the talks.

Pujut SUPP chief Adam Yii, who is Miri mayor, said the Pujut and Krokop branches were being consolidated in order to serve the constituents better.

“Pujut SUPP has set up a hotline to cater to the needs of the people and those with issues can call 019886 3819.

“We are also moving the Krokop and Pujut branches into one central location to merge the manpower so we can serve the people better.

“Pujut SUPP will use the GPS logo in our official signposts to symbolise that SUPP is in a united GPS coalition,” he said.

Yii said Pujut SUPP can be contacted via phone, whatsapp and other social media channels.

He said the people can expect fast action.

SUPP lost Pujut to DAP in the 2011 state polls.

In 2016 state polls, DAP again won the Pujut seat by defeating United Peoples Party (UPP) candidate.

UPP is a breakaway party of the SUPP.

SUPP is now staking a claim for the right to contest the Pujut seat in the state elections.

Yii is campaigning to be the SUPP-GPS candidate for Pujut and take on Pujut incumbent assemblyman Ting Tiong Choon, who is from the DAP.

Ting defeated UPP Miri chief Datuk Hii King Chiong in the May 7, 2016 state polls, with a majority of 1,400 votes.

Will Sarawak polls be held in 2019?

Sarawak Chief Minister YAB Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has until 2021 to call for a state election. But some political pundits say it is now or never.

The Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government can’t wait until Dr. Mahathir and Anwar focus on the biggest state in Malaysia. The state government will be facing the might of the Federal Government.
