My second son, Charles Gana will be sitting for his UPSR examination for Primary Six students this September. Thanks to the Internet, we have a few website giving free download to UPSR question papers. One of the best is at Portal Pendidikan Utusan question banks, where schools are able to contribute their question papers and other students from other schools can download it for free – and, of course, we get those questions from year 2001 for not being a member!

For the SPM students, the best so far is by Times Guide Sdn. Bhd. With a free registration, Times Guide allows its user to download Questions, Answers and even offer tips for the various subjects.

We also see a lot of advertisement on herbal product that claim to be able to sustain the students’ memory, etc. One of it is the BRAND’S Essence of Chicken. Those days, I remembered most mothers to newborn babies would have this handy. But, today, its a household brand and can be found in a lot of students cabinet.

The website’s description of the product sound like this:

BRAND’S Essence of Chicken
The BRAND’S Essence of Chicken you grew up with is full of wholesome, nourishing goodness. When taken regularly, this all natural health food supplement sustains your health, through all stages of your life.

By increasing your metabolic rate, it helps to relieve fatigue and to restore both your mental alertness and physical energy (within 15 to 30 mins!). It has even been proven to help your body absorb and use vital nutrients like iron. You can be sure of all the benefits you’ve come to expect of BRAND’S Essence of Chicken, and more! Simply put, BRAND’S Essence of Chicken is your trusted friend, “For Mind. For Body. For Life.”

WordPress have been a good blogging script for myself. It have the features that I need to put my thoughts into word and to share it with those who have come here.

WordPress have in its Manage option -> Import -> Import/Export WordPress. I do not have problem in exporting my post, etc from this blog. However, the Import function only allows the XML file of 2Mb and below (at least for this server). While my old blog XML files is more that the 2Mb limit, that leaves me little choice.

screen-wp-import.gif

Hence, for my new blog, I will probably upload the photos via FTP and insert it using the Insert/Edit Image button for my post.

A trial offline (that is on the XAMPP server on my home computer), I am able to Import up to 32Mb of the WordPress WXR file. How do I configure this server to accept an Import of more than 2Mb?

If all failed, it will be a waste of time for all the years, and finally we are not able to “transfer” o import/export ALL our posts!

Here are some practical solutions for my problem.

Hi to all my readers,

After more than a year of handling a few of my domains, I feel it is a bit tedious and tiring, especially having to upload to different servers, and creating links here and there.

Hence, this coming 14 September, 2007, the day of my 2nd anniversary for the RumahDayak.com domain; I will be using one single server and shall park the rest of my domain to this server. It is like a one-stop-center for me – one FTP server, one web server, one email server with a few parked domains, etc.

And, I am also on the search for a script that shall allow me to blog using my O2 XDA II mobile phone, and upload directly to this server. Do let me know if you know of any script. It is very much like the Opera Mini, which allows users to blog, upload photos, etc directly from their mobile phone to a web server.

Indeed WordPress is able to handle that, but I am more on the search for a ‘portal’ sort of mobile interactivity.

Web 2.0
Beside mobile blogging and RumahDayak.com is moving towards Web 2.0 and based on O’Reilly brainstorming session, Web 2.0 means Google AdSense, flickr, bitTorrent, napster, wikipedia, blogging, upcoming.org and EVDB, search engine optimization, cost per click, web services, participation, wikis, tagging (“folksonomy”) and syndication.

Blogging – this blog (www.uchukeling.com) shall be THE arena for me to put my thoughts into digital print.

Community Portal – As of today, I have started to work on my new phpBB interface design. With all the feedback that I have gathered over the two years, and the extra years maintaining rumahpanjai.com with Reganold a.k.a Recc, it have come to a conclusion that the Dayak Internet users prefer to be simple, less clicks and a “straight to the point” type of website. Obviously, this is due to the fact that my community portal comprises of users from the middle age and older age group. Most of them have little exposure on the various Internet technologies, and the reason why they are part of Rumah Dayak is because, everyone is talking about it.

With the positive feedback I get from people like Desmond Jerukan and Reganold, I am confident to come up with something good for the community. I would like to thank all the generous sponsors and supporters who have assist me in financing the portal and its activities. Until you are in the system, then only you will know how much it cost to manage a portal like Rumah Dayak.

With the few sponsors and the little fund we have, Rumah Dayak is able to assist the big brothers in delivering the community service to the people in need of it.

Web communities
Today we have seen more and more Dayaks participating in one way or another in the usage of the Internet facilities that is available in Sarawak. We have seen more Dayak websites being registered. We see the growth in ownership of personal domain. More Dayak businesses are having their own corporate websites, and I myself is involved in a few. Although some did not manage to sustain their web presence, but it is a starting point to their future web involvement.

Online learning
I will also be having a section where I will share my online experience with my readers at the portal. This section will start with an online how-to website on the common application that is being used by the Dayak community.

The excitement is there and I am looking forward to see more readership for this online journal and constructive participation at the forum too.

Cheers!

Updated: August 13, 2007

There was another major blackout in Miri on August 11, 2007. According to this news report by Bernama, the source of the black out was due to a fire at one the transformer. This was the second incident over a month’s period. The earlier major blackout was not even in the news (everyone said that the media was not allowed to publish the news – well, its common in Sarawak, anyway!)

To my understanding (correct me if I am wrong), we should be having two sources of power in Miri, 1., from Batang Ai Hydro Station and 2., from the power generators at Pujut 1.

In the recent blackouts, what happen to SESCO’s back-up plan? While many residents cried over rotten food, SESCO remain silent on the issue, and we have yet to see any reduction on our bills!

Below is the news extract from The Borneo Post Online:

Blackout blamed on sabotage

Transformer totally damaged, causing 18 hours of darkness; 2,000 Miri residents affected

MIRI: A Sarawak Sesco Berhad electricity transformer was totally damaged last night, believed to be sabotaged, causing an 18-hour power supply disruption to some 2,000 residents in Piasau, here.

The blackout lasted from 10.40 on Saturday night to 4.12pm yesterday.

A Sarawak Sesco staff when contacted said work to restore supply to the area could not be carried out immediately as the whole transformer had to be replaced.

Information obtained from the contractor involved in restoring the power supply, told Bernama yesterday that their inspection revealed that someone had drained out a few hundred litres of lubricant required to run the transformer, causing it to burn out.

The contractor said work to replace the transformer only started yesterday morning as they could not get the replacement unit immediately from Sarawak Sesco on Saturday night.

Sarawak Sesco’s northern region manager Polycarp Wong could not be contacted to comment on the incident.

The post below was posted earlier on 20th July.

Almost the whole of Miri City were without electricity yesterday starting from about 11 a.m. Some of the power were restored to commercial blocks around Imperial Mall.

Most of the shopping complexes have their own back-up generator, but banks were mostly reduced to manual key-in, etc.

Residential areas are only lighted from 6.30 p.m onwards while those around Piasau Lorong 1-11 may have electricity restored much earlier.

Electricity to my area at Taman Da Sing was restored at around 6.30 pm yesterday.

I was made to understand by unofficial source that there was a major transmission breakdown. Our Deputy Chief Minister 1, Datuk Patinggi George Chan was not available for comment since he had to attend two functions yesterday.

A check in the Borneo Post online today reveal nothing on the power breakdown!!

What happened to our back-up station at Pujut 1?
