Sarawak may issue individual title for longhouse bilek

Chief Minister, Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud says the new concept for longhouses will not discard its uniqueness and cultural diversity but giving the longhouse a new look in modern living.

Abdul Taib also says the new look will create a conducive environment for the longhouse dwellers thus enabling them to live better life and a change in lifestyle.

This is in line with the government’s effort through the One Malaysia concept and the New Economic Module where the livelihood of the needy and those in the rural areas will not be neglected.

Abdul Taib said this at the opening of a seminar on the development of the New Concept for Longhouses in Sarawak for the southern zone in Kuching this afternoon.

His text of speech was read by Minister of Housing and Urbanization Development, Datuk Amar Abang Haji Johari Tun Abang Haji Openg.

He said the concept would also enable the government to give them individual title as those occupying low cost housing and affordable houses.

This would help each family to insure their properties and wealth, especially from fire besides entitled them to apply for housing loan from financial institutions.

Earlier in his speech, the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Dato’ Sri Douglas Uggah Embas urged the government to expedite the issuing of land title for longhouses in Sarawak which are still low, even though a number of these longhouses were gazetted as “native communial longhouse reserve”.

As such, he said, more seminars and briefings should be conducted by the Land and Survey departments the importance of the individual title.

The two-day seminar were attended by about three hundred community leaders, longhouse heads, residents and district officers from Kuching, Samarahan, Sri Aman and Betong divisions.

Similar seminar for the northern and central zones will be held later this month in Miri and Sibu respectively.
