Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar

KUCHING: Barisan Nasional (BN) clubs, set up by sacked office bearers of SPDP, cannot promote their cause nor hold membership drive unless and until they (BN clubs) are registered.

Deputy Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, who is a lawyer by training, said doing these would infringe laws related to societies.

However, there is nothing in the law to say that people, including former members of SPDP, cannot form associations or clubs, he said, when asked to share his views on this issue.

“If I remember my law correctly, they can only hold membership drive and promote their cause after the club is registered.”

The BN cubs are the work of five former SPDP members, whose moniker is ‘SPDP Five’, who were sacked recently for gross insubordination. Shown the door were Mas Gading MP Datuk Dr Tiki Lafe and assemblymen Datuk Peter Nansian Nguise (Tasik Biru), Datuk Sylvester Entri Muran (Marudi), Rosey Yunus (Bekenu) and Paulus Palu Gumbang (Batu Danau).

Last month, they held a MoU signing event in Bau with several community leaders, apparently to garner support there.

Wan Junaidi, who is also Santubong MP, said: “Article 10 (1) (c) of the (Malaysian) Constitution provides the right for citizens of this country to an association and subject only to the provision of Article 10 (2) (c) that governs infringement of security, public order and morality.”

He said he believed politics could become ‘the art of the possible’ if stakeholders legitimised their efforts.

“There are many things in politics that could legitimise efforts (to form clubs), for instance, voices of the people. The law has a certain amount of certainty, but there are many aspects of what is right and proper in politics.”

Recently, political analyst Dr Jeniri Amir said the formation of BN clubs to accommodate disgruntled members of BN component parties would set a bad precedent for the ruling coalition.

If the BN clubs are allowed to spawn, its prominence would slowly erode the relevance of BN political parties and also the power-sharing concept which the BN had been pratising all this while, said Jeniri, who is also a local university lecturer.

Thus far, Nansian and Entrie have made the unprecedented move of forming BN clubs in their respective constituencies, and it is understood that they were contemplating getting it registered by the Registrar of Societies (ROS).

Hardcore ground spokesman for SPDP, Stewart Aying, who is also SPDP Lambir chief, said recently that the sacked members were trying to hang on to BN for political survival, to secure the right to continue disbursing BN minor rural project (MRP) fund, and to maintain their assistant ministerial posts.

Aying said BN, at the moment, did not want to rock their own boat simply by announcing that these independent incumbents (in Mas Gading and Tasik Biru) were outside BN, explaining that if the BN announced that the sacked incumbents were outside BN, then the coalition would technically have lost several representatives to the opposition.

MIRI: Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) Beluru branch yesterday slammed SPDP Piasau Youth chief James Joshua for barking up the wrong tree over issues raised by 47 longhouse chiefs and councillors on Sunday.

Branch chairman and longhouse chief (Tuai Rumah) Steward Kayong rubbished James’ sarcastic remark – that the group was bragging about their assemblyman Datuk Sylvester Entri’s big majority win in the last state election was not due to his popularity but to BN ticket.

The branch said the group in Beluru meeting on Sunday expressed their displeasure over the statement of being treated as second class citizen and being asked to show cause letter over their absence at the controversial function in Ulu Teru by SPDP president Tan Sri William Mawan on Oct 2.

“If that is the case, how does James, who is a registered voter in Krian, explain the loss of deputy president Datuk Peter Nyarok in the constituency despite standing on a BN ticket? Also, what about other losses?,” Steward asked.

His view was supported by branch secretary Nelson Nulai who said the Piasau Youth chief has missed the mark in talking about what was happening in Marudi constituency.

They said that there was no mention of anyone threatening to go against the BN in the next election as alleged by James, but lamented that the disunity arising could erode BN’s support in the stronghold.

Entri won with the biggest majority among all the SPPD candidates in the last state election, but James played it down. He said that Entri’s loyalist should remember that the majority of voters in Marudi supported BN, and challenged them to ask their assemblyman to stand on an Independent ticket in the next state election.

“Being a BN candidate is not a guarantee of winning in an election but a good track record of being on the ground and addressing needs and issues faced by the electorate are,” said Steward.

Steward and Nelson said James should stop meddling in Marudi, as the longhouse chiefs, councillors and BN supporters there had been trying hard to maintain the strength (of BN) and not weaken it as painted.

James has also accused Entri’s loyalists of continued verbal attack on Mawan as affirming suspicion that Entri masterminded a plan to topple the president.

He claimed that Mawan was trying to ‘protect’ Entri from being expelled from the party by not washing dirty linen in public since the plot was uncovered two years ago, and even promoted him to vice-president.

He was also quoted as saying that apparently Entri was not grateful and preferred to go against the former by insisting that Mawan had reneged on his promise to reinstate him as secretary-general.

Since then, Entri and four other representatives have been regarded as the Group of 5 in the aftermath of the last triennial delegates conference, but four of them – Paulus Palu Gumbang, Rosey Yunus, Datuk Peter Nansian and Entri- went on to score convincing victory in the last state election.

The war erupted when Mawan, in Sibu to celebrate the conferment of his ‘Tan Sri’ title, said that he would exercise his presidential power to act against those who went against the party. This was taken as a threat by the group.

The visit by a big entourage led by Mawan to Ulu Teru on Oct 23 was marred by controversy and verbal barbs were traded between both sides.

The writer/editor of the above news has been fair to have include extract of my Monday’s statement. JAMESJG.COM is in the opinion that the loyal supporters of Datuk Slyvester Entrie is in denial mode, hence there is not much new thing in the press statement yesterday. No respond from me. Cheers!

Serangan lisan penyokong cerminkan kesungguhan Entri jatuhkan presiden

KUCHING: The continued verbal attack on Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) president Tan Sri William Mawan by supporters of vice-president Datuk Sylvester Entri only goes to affirm the suspicion that he (Entri) has indeed masterminded a plan to topple the president.

Mawan is said to be ‘protecting’ Entri from being expelled by not washing dirty linen in public since the day he (Mawan) found out that Entri was masterminding a plan to overthrow him (Mawan) about two years ago.

But Entri is apparently not grateful to his president and instead preferred to go against him by insisting that he (Mawan) had reneged on his promise to keep him (Entri) as secretary-general which was made through what Entri called ‘status quo’ agreement.

Instead of exposing Entri’s master plan, Mawan promoted him to vice-president in the Jan 2010 supreme council meeting. Angered by the ‘untimely’ promotion, Entri staged and led a walkout. Several other members, including four elected representatives followed.

SPDP Piasau Youth chief James Joshua revealed all these yesterday in reaction to a newspaper report on Sunday that 47 headmen (TR) and councillors from Marudi had expressed their displeasure over Mawan’s Oct 23 visit to Kpg Mission Ulu Teru in Tinjar Baram to lend support to its Barisan Nasional (BN) incumbent Dato Jacob Dungau Sagan.

James said he was perplexed as to the claim made by Entri’s loyalists that he (Entri) won by a handsome margin in the last state election because Entri was so popular.

“The majority of voters in Marudi supported BN and therefore Entri won in the April 16 state polls. Bragging that Entri is popular is like saying that he can win without the BN banner. Why don’t they ask their beloved Entri to stand on an independent ticket in the next state election?” James asked.

“These so called Entri loyalists must remember that there are other people in Marudi or Baram for that matter. Marudi does not belong to Entri.

“Continued verbal attack on the president only goes to show how narrow his (Entri) politics and democratic principles are.

“The loyalists even threatened to go against the BN in the next general election just because they are unhappy with Mawan,” James said.

He added: “The big entourage that descended on Ulu Teru only goes to show that claims of security threat were baseless. They were created by instigators who did not want Entri’s shortcomings exposed by the villagers.”

Meanwhile, SPDP Supreme Council has yet to convene a meeting on Entri’s alleged failure to reply to its show-cause letter. The notice expired on Oct 26.

It is said that the meeting might be held after a meeting between Mawan and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today (Nov 1) to discuss among other things, SPDP’s early preparation for the next general election.
