SPDP sec-gen reaffirms party’s position and outlook
KUCHING: Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) is reinventing and rebranding itself and providing hope for young and budding politicians.
Its secretary-general Nelson Balang Rining said the party has emerged from its worst crisis and is moving on with renewed vigour.
Balang said he could not deny the party had been weakened by colluding forces from within and outside the party resulting in it losing two seats in the last state election, and had since exposed the onslaught and negative politicking of dissenting office bearers, he stressed.
He said the party supreme council members and president Tan Sri William Mawan had acted accordingly to contain the problems.
Now that the crisis is over, the party is moving on with renewed spirit of solidarity, he added.
“The party is moving forward after settling its problems. It is now reconsolidating support not only for itself but also for the Barisan Nasional (BN). SPDP is now going for rebranding and providing hope for future leaders. Membership is growing. What else do you want from a party like SPDP?” he asked when countering the latest statement from a sympathiser of those who set up the BN Club.
Balang said SPDP is a steady and disciplined party adhering to laws and regulations as well
as BN principles and understanding.
He pointed out the party, in collaboration with other leaders in Mas Gading, is looking for a new candidate to defend Mas Gading for BN, because the incumbent Datuk Dr Tiki Lafe, who was former SPDP vice-president, had been sacked for insubordination and undermining the party’s stability.
As a partner, SPDP has the locus standi to offer recommendations to BN. As Mas Gading has been allocated to it, SPDP has the right to defend it, he added.
“Whatever outsiders say about the party it is their business. The party will move on and act according to the course of events. Those with open and clear minds can see all these while those with clouded minds will never see them,” he added when countering a recent statement that the party is out to confuse Mas Gading constituents by looking for a new candidate.
He also said the Mas Gading parliamentary constituency is never short of smart, credible and able Bidayuh leaders, and when the BN has decided on the candidacy, majority of the people, BN supporters and loyalists will know who to vote for.
He said he could not speak for the opposition voters, as he is a BN man.
“I do not know who the opposition members will eventually vote for. I can’t speak for them. If they think BN can deliver further development and progress in their respective areas, they too will vote for BN. I do not think people will vote for individuals. Its either BN or Pakatan Rakyat,” he said.
He said he did not care if the BN Club sympathisers were members of BN component parties other than SPDP because as far as SPDP is concerned, it is managing its own affairs without much trouble now.
Balang also said he did not believe Mas Gading constituents were confused by the political happenings around them.
“Those who said other people were confused are using the term for their own gain and only entertaining themselves. Mas Gading constituents will know what to do when the time comes,” he added.
He said SPDP would be holding its Triennial General Meeting in Bintulu on March 17 and 18 and the venue, Bintulu Civic Centre is expected to be packed.
